Christmas tree stands are a veritable paradise for birds. Here, there is good access to food, since the soil is only cultivated gently (every 10th year). The low herb vegetation provides a diverse insect life from which the birds can live. Moreover, small birds find protection in Christmas trees, which are also offering good potential for building nests.
Hence, a major Austrian biodiversity investigation has established that bird life (exemplified by wood lark and red-backed shrike) in Christmas tree stands is better than on agricultural land and almost on a level with that in forests - in this context, Christmas trees can be compared to young forest.
